Implants

Dental Implants

Dental implants are an option for people who suffer from tooth loss.  This treatment is designed to be permanent and can be successful in replacing a large number of missing teeth. It is crucial to find a reputable and skilled cosmetic dentist to carry out the procedure.

Are dental implants right for you?

Whether you have lost one or all of your teeth, dental implants can help to restore a tooth-like presence in many cases. This not only improves the appearance of your mouth and smile but also ensures better gum protection and ease of eating. One of the most important requirements is a significant amount of bone in the region of the missing tooth. Otherwise a bone graft can assist, but this furthers the complexity and cost of the treatment.

Are the implants permanent?

Dental implants are a permanent alternative to fixed dental bridges or removable dentures, and will benefit those who are willing to pay for a treatment that lasts. While the implant itself is permanent, the crown attached to it should last between 10 and 15 years depending on the patient’s oral hygiene. This can then easily be replaced by fixing a new crown to the implant.

How are they fitted?

Any necessary bone grafting will come first, with the graft usually taken from the jaw. The titanium fixtures are screwed directly into the jaw bone. This can take a considerably long stretch of time for many implants. Sometimes some people experience pain, discomfort, bruising or swelling in the first few days. The area will need to heal for around 4 to 6 months before the crown is attached. In this period the bone surrounds and extends into the implant, though in some cases (1 to 2%) the body rejects the implant and the dentist must try a different size.

Advantages of dental implants

Dental implants offer a sturdy support for the crowns and better stability than removable bridges and partial dentures, strengthening your bite to the same degree as fixed dental bridges. They are natural looking and should feel comfortable in your mouth. The implants are permanent.
